Description

MOTM is pleased to welcome Mark Gibbs as our featured guest this Tuesday night, March 30.

For all the benefits computers and the Internet have given our culture they have also made it far more complex. That complexity appears not only in the mechanics of how we do things but also in the way we think about what we and others do in this brave new whirl. Arguably, one of the biggest problems is that we don't have useful ethical frameworks in which to make judgments about both old and new behaviors. For example, should people be responsible for how a computer misbehaves when they don't control it? Is it reasonable to consider sending teenagers to prison for sexting? Is a school overstepping its role by using computers to monitor student behavior when they are out of school? These are just a few of the many thorny questions that face us and in this salon, we'll examine a few selected cases, both real and fictitious, and as a group explore the ethical questions involved.
