The African American Men's Health & Social Life Study
Presented by Derrick Matthews, MPH (PhD Candidate) - UNC
The African American Men's Health & Social Life Study
The African American Men's Health & Social Life Study is an investigation of African American men's health beliefs, behaviors, and social experiences. African American men are at risk for heart disease, diabetes, and other preventable health conditions. In addition, African American men are less likely to go to the doctor when sick. This study seeks to gain a better understanding of men's use of health services, as well as factors that contribute to their health. Study participants must be at least 18 years old.
The study is being conducted by Dr. Wizdom Powell Hammond, a professor at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. Members of her research team will also be assisting. The team will ask about a variety of topics, ranging from demographics, use of health care, sexual health, experiences of discrimination, religion, and masculinity.
African American men are often omitted from public health research, and this is especially true for those who are also sexual minorities. This event will allow the better understanding of men's health;issues which are not well-studied or documented.
Your participation will help to raise awareness within the community about men's everyday health and social concerns. Eligible participants will complete an anonymous survey and a one-time questionnaire. No names, numbers or identifying information will be collected.
In exchange for your time, you will receive a $25 gift card. Additionally, you will receive information about the study, and the opportunity to share their story with the research team.
