Across Time & Across the Globe:The History & Future of Black Queer Community in the African Diaspora
Presented by Tara Lake and Day Alaba
Designed to work in tandem, these workshops explore critical aspects of the culture, history, and survival strategies of African-descended queer communities in the United States and across the globe. We will also explore methods for charting our own success as individuals and communities as we move into a new century of Queer Black Power.
Time: 2 hrs.
(Part 1) "Colonial Homophobia the Movements that have Emerged in the Diaspora."
Homophobia has roots in colonial law that were developed to oppress and control. Although these laws no longer govern the beneficiaries of colonialism, these mechanisms are still prevalent and in active use in former colonies. We investigate the history and presence of queer folk in pre-colonial African communities and examine the impact of colonial oppression in Africa and throughout the diaspora. We also explore how LGBT communities in the African Diaspora create identity and safe spaces as the face of oppression looks more like their own.
(Part 2) "Black QueerStory: Fierce, Gifted & Black Gays and Lesbians In U.S. History,"
Black Gay and Lesbian activists, writers, educators, and innovators have been present in every progressive and significant movement in African American History. This workshop illuminates the history of the contributions of African American Lesbian women and Gay men from the 1800s to the present, with a special emphasis on the fine, performing, and literary arts. The workshop will also provide tools to empower participants to declare their own place in the annals of Black Queerstory.
