Implementing Response to Intervention in Elementary Schools: Practical Tips
A guide to understanding the principles of the response to intervention paradigm and how to apply them effectively.
Although the principles of RTI may be simple, implementation of this tiered approach to data-differentiated instruction is complex for most schools. Dr. Hall will share practical tips from consulting with hundreds of elementary schools to support their implementation of RTI in reading. The following topics will be covered:
• Establishing common terms and definitions of RTI among general and special education staff • Alternatives for who, what, when and where intervention groups are provided • Using CBM data to sort students • Using diagnostic data to pinpoint deficit skills and place students in Tier 2 skill groups • Addressing deficits in decoding based on phonological awareness and phonics continuums • Progress monitoring to move students between flexible skill groups • Planning intervention lessons in PA and phonics • Remembering vocabulary and comprehension issues for students with low oral language skills
