Pediatric Luncheon 'Making a Difference in a Child's Life'
Award-winning actor, published author and father BD Wong will be the keynote speaker at Providence Hospice of Seattle's 11th Annual Pediatric Luncheon, "Making a Difference in a Child's Life," on Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010. The event is co-hosted by the Safe Crossings Foundation and is expected to attract more than 800 people.
BD Wong is well-known for his roles on the television shows "Law & Order Special Victims Unit" and "Oz," as well as movie roles in "Father of the Bride," Disney's "Mulan," and other popular films.
In 2003, Wong published his memoir "Following Foo: (the electronic adventures of The Chestnut Man)," which documents his family's experience watching his twin sons fight for their lives after a premature birth. Through this experience, Wong gained empathy and understanding for what hospice families go through - especially those who have lost a child.
King-5 TV news anchor Dennis Bounds will emcee the event.
Doors open for the luncheon at 11:30 a.m. and the program will begin promptly at 12 noon at the Washington State Convention Center, 800 Convention Place, in Seattle. Participants will not be charged for lunch, but a $125 donation is requested. Funds raised will be used towards pediatric hospice and palliative care. Proceeds also benefit grief support programs, including Camp Erin - King County, a summer camp for children who are experiencing a loss in their lives.
Born and raised in San Francisco, BD Wong graduated from San Francisco State University. In 2000, Wong and his longtime partner Richie Jackson had twins via a surrogate mother. The twins were born 11 weeks early and baby boy Boaz tragically did not survive. Three years later, Wong wrote a memoir, "Following Foo: (the electronic adventures of The Chestnut Man)," about his struggle with both the loss of one son and the strong will of the other to survive. Wong gives readers a view into his world, where Foo's struggle to hold onto his fragile life is paramount.
