Music at the Mission presents Music in the Time of Turmoil
Continuing its intimate and thought-provoking chamber series, Music at the
Mission presents a program of music by modern masters inspired by social
conflicts, their challenges to humanity and the underlying hope for peace.
An informative talk at 7:15 p.m. precedes the concert.
Armed conflict brings out the worst of humanity, and it has also inspired
some of history's greatest art. The March 13 concert features top Bay Area
musicians Jeff Anderle, clarinet; Karen Shinozaki Sor, violin; Gianna
Abondolo, cello; and Music at the Mission Director Aileen Chanco, piano,
performing moving works by Messiaen, Schoenfield, Janaek, and Christos
Hatzis. Of particular note is the ambitious and ground-breaking Quartour
pour le fin du temps (Quartet for the End of Time) written by Olivier
Messiaen in 1941 as a passionate response to the brutality of the times.
This concert is made possible by a grant from the San Francisco Friends of
Chamber Music, Musical Grant Program and the Fremont Bank Foundation.
Founded by Aileen Chanco in 2005, Music at the Mission restores the luster
of Mission San Jose's early 19th century reputation as an active center
for musical performance by presenting a vibrant mix of contemporary and
historic music in the intimate acoustics of the Mission. Chanco draws on
the wealth of accomplished Bay Area's musical community, inviting the
region's top performers to come together in a celebratory atmosphere of
music making and exploration of chamber music in various combinations
ranging from duos to small orchestral configurations.
