Impact of the Global Financial Crisis on Armenia: Short and Long-run Perspectives
International Conference

The conference aims to explore the impact of the global economic crisis on Armenia, develop scenarios for coping with consequences of the crisis, and provide policy recommendations to mitigate the impact of the crisis.

The conference intends to foster a dynamic exchange of ideas aimed at influencing public policy in Armenia. Presentations of cross-country experiences of emerging economies will provide comparative venues for discussion regarding how to move towards economic policies in Armenia which will propel the Armenian economy into a higher growth trajectory. The global crisis can provide an opportunity for economic renewal if Armenia takes determined actions at this critical juncture.

The conference will address:

1. Consequences of the global financial and economic crisis: lessons for Armenia;

1. Impact of crisis on emerging and developing countries and policy responses (Poland, Romania, Macedonia, Ukraine, Croatia, Russia);
2. The role of EU in supporting emerging economies in coping with crisis;
3. Impact of crisis on Asian economies and prospects for economic development;
4. Lessons for Armenia.

2. The impact of the crisis on Armenia and policy response;

1. Macroeconomic impact;
2. Social impact, policy priorities;
3. Monetary policy and exchange rate;
4. Institutional and structural issues;
5. IMF/WB/Russian support package to mitigate crisis impact;
6. Government response to crisis;
7. Impact on growth sectors (tourism, IT, mining, construction, etc.).

3. Prospects for growth and competitiveness of Armenian economy.

1. Government's program for sustainable development - drivers of growth;
2. Policies and strategies to improve competitiveness;
3. New opportunities supporting crisis mitigation: the impact on the Armenian Economy of the potential border opening with Turkey (border opening and the private sector: new transport routes, new export markets).

The conference will bring together representatives of central banks, ministries of finance, and research centers from a number of countries, as well as presenters from international organizations.
