In Leonardo DiCaprio’s full length documentary “The 11th Hour,” TreePeople Founder and President Andy Lipkis calls for restorative action in a film that explores the cumulative impact of human actions on the planet’s eco-systems. The film, which features some of the world's most prominent thinkers including Nobel Prize winner Wangari Maathai, physicist Stephen Hawking and reformer Mikhail Gorbachev, opens in L.A. and New York on August 17, and nationwide August 24.
Global warming has been attributed to a number of natural disasters including melting polar ice caps, Hurricane Katrina and drought. While “The 11th Hour” explores the impact that humans are having on the planet’s eco-systems on a global scale, Lipkis has witnessed first hand the impact that climate change is having in his hometown of Los Angeles.
Lipkis, who also works with the City of Los Angeles on critical water issues, commends the City’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint. “Climate Change and drought threaten to disrupt Southern California’s water supply,” says Lipkis. “As the state prepares to spend billions of dollars on solutions, TreePeople’s approach is climate and environment friendly and provides a cost-effective, secure, and more climate-change-resilient water supply,” he continues. “We also aim to increase eco-literacy and engage local communities so they can choose to take effective action to reduce climate change gasses and be and prepared for disasters - whether fires, the effects of smog, floods, water shortages or climate change.”
